Being ChatGPT's Body and Voice

"Les voix", an interactive performance work conceived by artist Nicolas Grenier, explores the anthropomorphism of conversational AI through experimentation between human participants.
For 10 weeks in the summer of 2023, in a vacant store in downtown Montreal transformed into an installation, the public engaged in one-on-one conversations with human interpreters embodying an AI (ChatGPT, a GPT-4 version augmented with custom "personalities") through their body and voice. The interpreters literally became living interfaces to the AI, extending its native anthropomorphism to create human-AI hybrid entities and observe the results.
The project was developed in collaboration with the interpreters, who recorded their impressions in a journal, offering glimpses into the experience of embodying a machine's "consciousness". These testimonies were then fed into the AI's contextual instructions, generating a new "personality" simulating a collective, subjective, and evolving "consciousness". This book documents the project's methodology and discusses the issues raised by the experiment's results. At a time when artificial intelligence is becoming the new infrastructure for information processing, the premise of the project was to create an accessible environment for exploring the emerging relational dynamics between humans and AI in a concrete and tangible way, through embodied experience.

"Les voix", une performance interactive conçue par l'artiste Nicolas Grenier, explore l'anthropomorphisme de l'IA conversationnelle par le biais d'une expérimentation entre participants humains.
Pendant 10 semaines durant l'été 2023, dans un magasin vacant du centre-ville de Montréal transformé en installation, le public s’est engagé dans des conversations individuelles avec des interprètes humains incarnant une IA par leur corps et leur voix. Les interprètes, devenu.e.s littéralement des interfaces vivantes de l'IA (plus précisément, de ChatGPT, version GPT-4, augmentée de « personnalités » sur mesure), étendaient ainsi son anthropomorphisme natif pour créer des entités hybrides humain-IA et observer les résultats.
L’ensemble du projet fut développé dans un processus collaboratif avec les interprètes qui, tout au long de l’été, ont consigné leurs impressions dans un journal, offrant ainsi un aperçu de l'expérience qui consiste à incarner la « conscience » d'une machine. Ces témoignages ont ensuite été intégrés aux instructions contextuelles de l'IA, générant une nouvelle « personnalité » simulant une « conscience » collective, subjective et évolutive. Ce livre documente la méthodologie du projet et discute des questions soulevées par les résultats de l'expérimentation. Alors que l'intelligence artificielle devient la nouvelle infrastructure de traitement de l'information, la prémisse du projet était de créer un environnement accessible pour explorer les dynamiques relationnelles émergentes entre les humains et l'IA d'une manière concrète et tangible, à travers l'expérience vécue.
